Concussions…more than “no big deal”
Watch any sporting event and the big injury topic is now concussions and making sure to protect the players from returning to play once they’ve sustained a concussion. The research and treatment of concussions has come a long way over the past few years and it’s no longer viewed as “no big deal.”
A concussion is classified as a mild traumatic brain injury that is caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. The force causes the brain to bounce around or twist in skull creating chemical changes in brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells.
Common symptoms of a concussion:
Headache – 75%
Difficulty concentrating – 57%
Fatigue – 52%
Drowsiness – 51%
Dizziness – 49%
Foggy – 47%
Feeling slowed down – 46%
Light sensitivity – 45%
Balance problems – 39%
Difficulty with memory – 38%
Physical therapy can help address any lingering symptoms from a concussion. Common risk factors for developing vestibular symptoms following a concussion that may slow your recovery include: personal history of motion sickness, personal history of vestibular disorder, and history of migraines or anxiety disorder.
