How Physical Therapy Can Help with Dizziness and the Inner Ear

Many people don’t know much about the vestibular system—the part of your inner ear that helps with balance. So, let’s start by talking about what it does and how physical therapy can help when it’s not working right.

The vestibular system, which is about the size of a dime, is found inside your ear, near your temple. Its job is to sense how your head moves so your brain knows when you look up, down, turn your head, or bend over. It’s amazing how this tiny system helps us stay balanced! But when it’s not working properly, it can make you feel dizzy, unsteady, or even sick.

Common Symptoms of Vestibular Problems

  • When the vestibular system isn’t working as it should, people often describe feeling:

  • Unsteady or like they are staggering

  • Like their head is swimming or in the clouds

  • Dizzy or lightheaded

  • Like they are moving, as if on a rocking boat

  • A spinning sensation, called vertigo

  • Swaying or floating

  • Like they might pass out

Dizziness can stem from a variety of causes, but the good news is that many are treatable with physical therapy. By assessing your neck, inner ear, eye movements, and balance system, I can help determine if PT is right for you.
