My Crystals Are Loose!!! Now What?!

Did you know that benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is one of the few conditions that can be almost completely fixed with just one physical therapy treatment?

85-90% of People Feel Better After One Treatment!

Yes, you read that right! 85-90% of people feel better after just one session! And after treating BPPV for almost 10 years, I can tell you—that number is real.

How Does Treatment Work?

First, I figure out which ear and which semicircular canal has the loose crystals (also called otoconia). The most common spot where they get stuck is the posterior canal. To move them back where they belong, I use special techniques called:
Epley Maneuver (most common in the U.S.)
Semont Maneuver

Sometimes, the crystals end up in the lateral canal, which causes more severe vertigo. In those cases, I use:
Li Maneuver
Barbeque Roll Maneuver

Think of It Like a Hula Hoop!

Imagine a hula hoop filled with BBs. The hula hoop represents the semicircular canal in your ear, and the BBs are the loose crystals. The goal of the treatment is to rotate the hula hoop so the BBs move through and settle back where they belong.

What to Expect After Treatment

During treatment, I usually guide patients through the maneuver twice. Most people feel less dizzy or even completely better by the second round!

Afterward, I ask patients to:
🔹 Keep their heads level for up to two hours to let gravity settle the crystals.
🔹 Expect to feel a little off-balance or just have a general “blah” feeling for the rest of the day.
